Follow the Bonsai Mugs link in the left column to to see current inventory. I will be posting new mugs in different colors and sizes weekly until Christmas. The next load should be larger mugs for you coffee-holics.
For a potter Christmas is extra special. You’d think my friends and familiy would have received enough pottery over the years but apparently not. They’ve finally reached the point of putting in their Christmas order early. This year it’s been pickling crocks, espresso mugs, rice bowls, tortilla warmers, copitas, ring holders, and of course mugs. An annual coffee mug is expected. A new mug each Christmas has become a family obligation. I make 50-75 mugs, give away around 25 and offer the rest on the website. I will be adding a dozen or so each week up until Christmas so if color or shape is not to your liking there will be more offered in the coming weeks.
So, here is the potter’s dilemma. You can get a coffee mug at Walmart for $3, I know because I have a few myself. Everyone has a greatest Dad, Mom, Grandparent or Boss mug. There is around 1 lb 13 oz of clay in a mug. This would make a 6” bonsai pot. The mugs take me twice the time and effort. Warpage of handle and mug is common so kiln loss is fairly high. Someone wanting a handmade mugs appreciates it for what it is, handmade and one of a kind. It mean a lot to some, little to others. I respect both perspectives, but have a particular affinity for those who lean toward the hand crafted. I wish nothing but the best for you and your family this Christmas. We deserve a little break from it all.
